The idea behind this project was to re-purpose an abandoned auto mechanic shop in downtown Palm Springs, California into a chic, upscale living facility for the elderly. The building would be accompanied by a public park inspired by Roberto Burle Marx. With sustainability and cost in mind, I chose to keep the existing building in place, using the predetermined footprint as a way to become even more creative in how I decided to utilize the space. With a focus on retired creatives, the proposal provides six units, each of which comes with a designated studio workspace and gallery for displaying art on the ground floor. My mission was to emulate the vibrant color, landscape, and spirit of Palm Springs through the finishes and unique touches that can be seen in the renderings and line drawings accompanying this presentation. This project taught me that the designer has a duty to make spaces comfortable and accessible to everyone; there is much to consider when designing a space specifically for the elderly. Creating an oasis that is both safe and beautiful for people of all ages was a major driving force behind the design.
